en route

Today I am listening to: Lille by Lisa Hannigan
[BTW: I stole this general habit from Jessica Klein, a lovely lovely dancer friend 'o mine whose blog you should all check out]

i went to war every morning
i lost my way, but now I'm following
what you said in my arms...
what i read in the charms
that i loved durably
now it's dead and gone, and i am free...

I am free... for the weekend, that is...

Time to move on up
... Move on out?
Get up...
   ... Get down...

                                            Makin' waves.

I'm headed to WestFest in NYC
This is my second trip with Nicole Roerick [check her out!]
... and I'm still not convinced that this is my real life...

But I am greatly honored to be doing this festival in particular.

... you see, we are performing at the Merce Cunningham Studio Theater

And four years ago... when I was a wee modern dance neophyte, I stumbled upon Mr. Cunningham and his work.

He was one of the first choreographers I ever took the time to research...
Beyond discovering his truly unique way of looking at dance and movement, I discovered he was an extraordinary gentle soul and a wonderfully insightful human being.

He is also responsible my favorite quote...

"You have to love dancing to stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting moment when you feel alive. It is not for unsteady souls."

                    Thanks, Merce.

It's an honor to be performing in your space.
